Net design ideas

My initial ideas for my packaging were quite simple and here are some of them...

<<For my packaging initial ideas this is one design that i looked at from a previous students work. I like the way that it has been developed and designed. I like the way it has been designed with different compartments and flaps, that show different surface designs, illustrations and typography.

From this, I designed a net that would hopefully suit my target audience and the band/artist. I really like this net design because it looks simple and it works really well when it holds the CD, when I cut out the prototype. I think this design will be very appealing to the eye as it is very different to any other CD packaging that is sold it the shops.

Generating Ideas: Mood Board

Here is my mood board of ideas that I may use for the final out come of my CD packaging, colour scheme, logo and paper types.

Digital Surface Design

For more experiments for our CD packaging and inlays, we were asked to experiment with different ways to make a design. Here are my three out comes.

Here is my first surface design.

This was a rainbow effect using photoshop. For beginning part of this design I made two layers then added a gradient colour to each have one lighter than the other to get the correct effect that i thought would be great to use. After adapting the rainbow gradient with black lines, added white little squares to it to make the design to become more outstanding. I may use this technique for some part of my CD packaging but I may change the colours to adapt to the style of the band.

The second design was probably the easiest to make. As it was just copying the same design over and over again to create a distinguishing repeated pattern. I used the initails of my band and used a font that would look quite effective. I made the background a bright red so the white text would stand out. After that I made the background gradient of white going into pink then finally into red. The reason why i did this was because i wanted to get the effect that the text stamp was appearing out of nowhere. I may use this deign to the inlay to my Cd booklet.

This is the final digital surface design, which I chose to use my particular band in it. I uploaded the photo of the band to photoshop, then added 3 different pictures of textures that i thought that you work quite well. With all of the textures i added in i changed the effect of the placing some behind the photo of the band and some in-front making the lighter or darker than the band image. I really liked this effect. The reason why I liked this effect the most was because even though it did include a photo of my favourite band, it also included a lot of change use a grunge effect with different lighting and many effects that contrast well with eachother all in one photo.

CD bookbinding experiments

Above are three different ways of making a booklet inlay. All of these books have each got 4 12x24 different paper types including pink sugar paper, graph paper, tracing paper, parcel paper and plain paper.

The top image is used the normal way of using staples. This  is the normal method that most artist would use to have the lyrics and what the album is about printed in.I found this method quite easy to make and is easy to open.

The second booklet is held together by stitching it. This method was quite easy once you got going but at the beginning it was difficult as you had to make sure that the pages were all level and straight. This would be a good book for a artist that were into making homemade things.

Finally the last book inlay was used with 4 pieces of paper then hole-punched and attached with elastic bands. i feel this idea was quite inventive and different to anyother inlay that i have seen before. It is easy to assemble as there is an elastic band that secures the content in place.

CD Packaging experiments

For some more experimentation work, we were asked to follow instructions to make different types of CD packaging. This first one I made by folding the A4 sheet of paper in different sections. At first it looks like a square envelope but as you start to fold the remaining sections of the paper it starts to look like cd packaging. I really like this idea of making packaging because it is very simple and quite quite to make. I think maybe to brighten up this 'envelope' add some colour. It could either be a different coloured piece of paper, or even adding a rainbow of inks to the paper and let them run into eachother to get a a unique effect. However, I do think that this type of packaging design wouldn't really suit the style of my chosen artist.

With this second CD packaging experiment it was a completely new technique with a lot more folding and it did take me a little bit more longer to get the right result. This time I used a coloured piece of paper. I do like the concept of this idea, as it uses a lot of folding methods and you don't need any stationary for this process. Also the amount of time that has gone into making this cd packaging. Where as the first technique is much simpler and secure enough to keep the cd in place; in my opinion I feel that this packaging will not really support the CD and my fall out of the 'case'.
